My Son’s Every Birthday German Chocolate Pie

My Son’s Every Birthday German Chocolate Pie

We first ate this German chocolate pie in Brazil, prepared by my cousin. It was about 10 years ago and, since then, it’s the pie my son wants for his birthday. Considering he is not a sweet lover, it means he really likes it.

I like it too, and recently I’ve been able to increase its goodness by using salted butter. It really makes the difference.

It is a very simple pie, those ones prepared with biscuits, that I believe are the first little girls begin to prepare. They don’t need to be baked and the use of gas is only for a few minutes (to melt the chocolate).

As always, I personalized this German chocolate pie pie. At first, adapting to what I had at home (less cream, more biscuits, low fat milk…), and after trying to make it always better 😉

Another thing I changed regarding my cousin’s original recipe is that I do not only leave the pie in the fridge for a couple of hours, but I freeze it for 6 or more hours (maybe a night), and then leave it into the fridge until time to cut and eat it. For me this pie has to be served cold to give its best.

Recipe type: Desserts, Pies
Serves: 10
Ingredients
  • about 400 g of tea biscuits/cookies
  • 200 g of dark chocolate
  • 400 g of cream
  • 200 g of butter (I prefer salted butter)
  • 3 yolks
  • 180 ml of milk
  • 300 g of sugar
Instructions
  1. Melt the chocolate in bain marie or in the microwave.
  2. Add half of the cream, mix well and reserve.
  3. Put butter, sugar and yolks into your electric mixer bowl and turn it on for 10 minutes.
  4. Add the other half of cream and, as soon as it is well combined, turn the mixer off.
  5. Cover a removable side pan with parchment paper.
  6. Put the milk in a soup plate or bowl and wet the biscuits in it before setting them into the pan, forming a border and covering the bottom.
  7. Cover the first layer of biscuits with the butter and cream mixture.
  8. Make another layer of biscuits and so on.
  9. Finish with biscuits.
  10. Cover the last layer with the chocolate and cream mixture.
  11. Cover with plastic wrap and put into the freezer for at least 3 hours, or overnight.
  12. After it can be kept in the fridge.
  13. Buon appetito!
